While it might be automatic for most people to clean out the lint trap after using the dryer, many fail to consider the benefits of having their dryer vents professionally cleaned, too.
While this job is best left to those who know what they’re doing, and doesn’t need to be done after every use, dryer vent cleaning should be addressed regularly, and for a number of reasons:
- For safety
Your dryer runs hot, and if lint has built up in the dryer vent, this highly flammable material could pose a very real fire hazard. The U.S. Fire Administration state that dryers are responsible for as many as 15,000 structural fires every year, and clogged dryer vents are responsible for up to 80% of them.
Not only that, but fumes from gases and carbon monoxide can be forced back up into your home due to clogged vents, causing an air quality concern for the entire household and even posing a threat to the health of everyone living inside the home.
Fortunately, regular dryer vent cleaning can prevent this from ever becoming a serious risk.
- To address inefficiency
When dryers aren’t doing their job, and your clothes need multiple cycles to dry them properly, clogged vents are more than likely responsible. While this is inconvenient, it will also mean that you’re going to face higher electricity bills due to extended dryer times and multiple cycles.
- To help your dryer last longer
As mentioned in the point above, if your dryer vents are blocked with lint and other debris, you’ll need to run your dryer for longer than usual or carry out multiple cycles, and all of this will mean that your dryer’s life expectancy is gradually being reduced. An overworked dryer will also result in wear and tear, and inevitably, repairs will need to be carried out, or a replacement dryer purchased.
- To reduce or eliminate mold
Dryer vents are supposed to release moisture and hot air outside, but sometimes this can build up inside the vent and create wet spots, behind which lint can easily become trapped and go on to cause mold to appear. The wet lint can also adhere to the inside of the vent’s tube, making cleaning of the dryer more difficult.
- For the reduction of maintenance
Dryers, just like any other appliance, will last for longer and work more effectively if they’re cared for properly, and regular vent cleaning by a professional company, will help make sure that your clothes are being dried properly and without energy being wasted. Longer drying times can also put a strain on your fabrics.
By continuing to run a dryer inefficiently due to a clogged vent, you’ll inevitably encounter internal problems with the machine that will require repairs, and some of these could be costly. By having your dryer professionally cleaned at least once a year, you can avoid all of the problems listed above and keep your dryer running efficiently, and your energy bills lower.
